Questions we get asked

What is cotton rag paper?

Paper made from cotton textile offcuts instead of wood pulp. Cotton fibres are longer and stronger, so the sheet is tougher, more absorbent and keeps its colour for longer without yellowing.

Is cotton rag paper good for watercolour?

Yes. It soaks up water evenly, so washes dry without hard edges, and it stands up to lifting and reworking. For heavy washes on 250gsm, stretch the sheet first so it dries flat.

Should I choose a mid or smooth texture?

Mid texture has a light tooth that suits watercolour, pastel and charcoal. Smooth texture lets pens, ink and calligraphy nibs glide without catching, so fine detail stays crisp.

Can I use oil paint on cotton rag paper?

Yes, once you've primed it. Brush on a coat of gesso and let it dry before applying oil paint, so the oil doesn't soak into the fibres.
