Questions we get asked

What should I use gesso on?

Board, wood and heavy paper, so the paint sits on the surface instead of soaking in. You don't need it on our acrylic and oil painting pads: their canvas-feel paper comes pre-primed, so you can paint straight on.

What's the difference between gesso and impasto medium?

Gesso is a thin primer that goes on before you paint. Impasto medium is a heavy paste you mix into acrylic to build texture. It holds palette knife peaks as it dries and doesn't change your colour.

Turpentine or low odour turps substitute?

Both thin oil paint and clean brushes. Gum turpentine is distilled from pine resin and has a strong smell. The low odour substitute is much easier to work with indoors. Keep the room ventilated either way.

Do you sell varnish?

Not for paintings at the moment. Our only varnish is shellac, for sealing metal leaf, and it's in gilding supplies.
