Paint brushes and brush sets for watercolour, acrylic and oil, in short handles for working at a desk and long handles for an easel.
If you're starting out, a mixed set is the easiest way in, with flats, rounds and fine points together. For specific jobs there are quill mops for watercolour washes, hog hair flats for thick paint, liners for fine lines and Chinese hake brushes.
Short handles are for working close, at a desk or with a pad on your lap, which suits watercolour and detail. Long handles let you stand back from an easel, which is how most people paint in oil and acrylic.
A round with a good point and a brush that holds plenty of water. Our synthetic quill mops, sizes 2, 5 and 8, do both, and the fine point rounds handle detail.
Synthetic for watercolour, gouache and most acrylic: it's soft, springs back into shape and cleans easily. Hog hair is stiff, so it carries thick oil and heavy body acrylic and leaves visible brush marks.
Watercolour and acrylic wash out with water and a little soap. Clean acrylic before it dries in the bristles, as it won't come out afterwards. For oil, wipe off what you can, rinse in turpentine or low odour turps substitute, then wash with soap and water.
