Questions we get asked

What do H and B mean on a pencil?

H pencils are harder and make lighter, crisper lines. B pencils are softer and make darker lines that smudge and blend more easily. HB sits in the middle, and the higher the number, the harder or softer the pencil.

Which pencils do I need to start drawing?

A few grades rather than one. A 2H for light construction lines, HB or 2B for general sketching, and 4B to 6B for shading and darker tones. A graded set covers all of these.

Mechanical or clutch pencil?

A mechanical pencil takes thin leads, from 0.3mm to 0.9mm, which never need sharpening and give an even line for writing and technical drawing. A clutch pencil takes a thicker 2mm or 5.6mm lead that you sharpen with a lead pointer, so you can vary the line and use softer grades.

What is a woodless graphite pencil?

A pencil made entirely of graphite, with a thin coating instead of a wooden case, so you can draw with the point or shade with the side. The one we stock is water-soluble: go over it with a wet brush and the graphite turns into a soft grey wash.

What is a chinagraph pencil?

A wax pencil that marks glass, metal, plastic, leather and other shiny surfaces where graphite won't. Its marks resist water but wipe off smooth surfaces without scratching them.
