Acrylic paint in sets and single colours, from Daler-Rowney Simply and System 3 for getting started to Winsor & Newton Galeria in 60ml tubes.
Acrylic thins with water, dries fast and is waterproof once dry, so you can build layers quickly on paper, board and wood. If you're starting out, a set is the easiest way in.
The Daler-Rowney Simply set gives you 12 colours in 12ml tubes, which is a good first set for trying acrylic. The System 3 starter set has six 22ml tubes (titanium white, cadmium yellow hue, cadmium red hue, ultramarine, emerald and burnt umber): fewer colours in bigger tubes, so you mix more of your own. For larger work, the Galeria set has five 60ml tubes.
Mix in impasto medium. It thickens the paint enough to hold brush and palette knife marks as it dries, without changing the colour. Straight from the tube, System 3 is a medium body paint: creamy, and quick to cover large areas.
Once it's dry, yes. While it's wet it washes off with water, so rinse brushes and palettes before the paint dries on them.
Heavy paper, board and wood. Prime board and wood with gesso first so the paint doesn't soak in. We don't stock canvases, but our acrylic painting pad has 400gsm pre-primed canvas-feel paper you can paint straight onto.
