Renowned for being soft and finely textured, appearing as a thin, semi-opaque surface, Xuan or Rice paper is suitable for the expressive nature of traditional Sumi ink painting and calligraphy but also suitable for printmaking, pastels, collage, and fine drawing. Paper rolls are available in both Sheng (raw) which means the paper hasn't been sized making it very absorbent and ideal for an interpretive and free-flowing style - and Shu (ripe) which is sized making it less absorbent, slow drying, and more suited to finer detailed work.
