Questions we get asked

How do I stop air dry clay cracking?

Keep it covered while you work so it doesn't dry out, keep the thickness fairly even, and let it dry slowly away from radiators. To join two pieces, score both surfaces and add a little water before pressing them together.

What's the difference between air dry clay and modelling clay?

Air dry clay sets hard as it dries, ready to paint. Modelling clay is plasticine-style: it never dries out, so you can use it again and again, which makes it good for stop-motion animation and for making moulds to cast from.

Can air dry clay go in a kiln?

No. It's made to harden in the air and shouldn't be fired. Once dry it isn't waterproof, so it suits models and decorative pieces rather than anything that will hold water. We don't stock kiln clay at the moment.

Plaster of Paris or plaster wrap?

Plaster of Paris is a powder for casting in moulds: mix three parts powder to two parts water and it sets in about 40 minutes. Plaster wrap is bandage soaked in plaster, which you dip in water and shape over a form or wire frame. Don't use plaster of Paris for body casting, as it heats up as it sets.

What's in the pottery tool kit?

A kidney, a wire clay cutter, a ribbon tool, a double wire sculpting tool, a wooden sculpting tool, a stainless steel detailing tool, a wooden throwing rib and a sponge.
