How is our Indigo Cotton Rag Paper made?

Ever looked at our rag paper and wondered how it's made?

Watch this short video, showing the traditional methods and techniques used in making our best-selling INDIGO 100% cotton rag paper.

Here's a recap:

  1. The production of all our cotton rag paper starts as cotton waste / off-cuts from local factories, a completely sustainable solution to the alternative of it going to landfill.
  2. The waste cotton then gets cut and shredded making it workable and then gets submersed in a water bath turning it into a pulp.
  3. A screen is prepared in a waterbath, according to desired paperweight the pulp is measured and then added.
  4. To extract the pulp from the screen, the craftsmen carefully stretch a piece of cloth over it, securing it tightly in place.
  5. Knowing that the pulp is now secure, they flip the screen and release the sheet.
  6. After doing this process multiple times, they will end up with a stack of evenly spread out pulp (essentially very wet paper!) seperated by cloth sheets.
  7. A hydraulic press is then used to squeeze out the water from the stack of pulp.
  8. This process leaves you with damp paper, the damp paper is then seperated from the cloth sheet and then hung up to dry.
  9. Once the paper is dry, the paper is then fed through a paper roller finallising the paper.
  10. It is then counted, packaged and shipped to us here at Artway!
